External Instrument MIDI Playback Issues
byu/Ok_Question_556 inStudioOne
Good news! (where’s that “fingers crossed” emoji when u need it?) It appears as tho I’ve been able to fix the issue. “Fixed” may not actually be the correct term, but it’s resolved for now.
What I’ve Learned: Recording an External Instrument requires additional steps in order to do it successfully.

-
Set up your device as an External Instrument.
-
Set up the device in Audio Setup > Audio Device > Song Setup > Inputs in Options (you should see the input level change as you play setting it up).
-
In External Devices in the Mix section, assign it to an Aux channel and save it as the default.
-
Also, set up your device as an External Keyboard so you can record the MIDI input.
Until I realized that Step 5 was also necessary, I couldn’t get MIDI data to show up to record to an instrument track after uninstalling and reinstalling the FA-08. I’m reasonably sure that it wasn’t configured how it is now when I had the issues I described in this post initially. After making these changes, I was able to create a new song with a basic Impact drum track and record two or three minutes uninterrupted, play it back successfully without any glitches, record a separate track on top of the initial track and then play them both back simultaneously perfectly. I haven’t tested the new configuration on the tracks I’ve already recorded yet, but I can always re-record them if they can’t be salvaged now that I have something that works.
Again, I want to thank those of you who posted trying to help me troubleshoot the problem. One thing that I’ve learned about resolving issues in life is by galvanizing your thoughts and summarizing the steps you’ve taken in order to present it to someone else for help/suggestions, you often gain insight to the problem that you might not have had otherwise.
Thanks again!
