SHIFT + ALT + R

  • Click on Record Takes for MIDI tracks
  • Click on Takes to Layers for audio tracks

Note: This setting records new versions of tracks as you record. If you record in a loop, when the loop starts over a new “take” is created. If you want to create a new recorded version, you first need to delete the current take in the track. The actual takes will still be retained in layers below the tracks.

Additional Comment: If you normalize the current top take in an audio track, that doesn’t affect the original take so if you need to restore it, delete the normalized version and promote the track you want to use again.

The only “volume” settings I could find (so far) are by clicking on wrench in the transport

and adjusting them in here:

The first thing you might notice about my settings are that they are QUITE LOUD and the reason I wrote this post was because they currently ARE. So, for now, problem solved!

Since resolving my issue with External Instruments in Studio One (S1) I can now record multiple tracks using the FA. So, the next question that comes to mind is “how do I create separate tracks that all use different voices?”

Honestly, there’s a bit of a dilemma here: Playing back the track once everything is recorded will probably work best using a Studio Set for each track and channel the way I’m envisioning it, but recording new tracks while being able to listen to the existing tracks? No easy solution there. You could playback the existing tracks using a virtual instrument so you can hear what you’ve already recorded and record the new track on top, but that seems like a PITA. AFAIK, there is no easy, built-in solution.

I think I need to do some reconnaissance. TBC…

Something you should know about me: I hate retyping lengthy words or phrases (LWoP). So, if I refer to one of those LWoP, I often do what I just did: I create an acronym and tack it onto the end in parenthesis. Then, next time when I refer to something, I’ll just use the acronym (acro) (aside: am I the only one that thinks the word acronym should itself be shorter or easier to type?).

So, that is the reason for the creation of this page: if you ever see an acro that you don’t recognize and if I haven’t already implemented a tooltip solution making this page obsolete, please use this page for references:

External Instrument MIDI Playback Issues
byu/Ok_Question_556 inStudioOne

Good news! (where’s that “fingers crossed” emoji when u need it?) It appears as tho I’ve been able to fix the issue. “Fixed” may not actually be the correct term, but it’s resolved for now.

What I’ve Learned: Recording an External Instrument requires additional steps in order to do it successfully.

  1. Watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfdUtczw4rI

  2. Set up your device as an External Instrument.

  3. Set up the device in Audio Setup > Audio Device > Song Setup > Inputs in Options (you should see the input level change as you play setting it up).

  4. In External Devices in the Mix section, assign it to an Aux channel and save it as the default.

  5. Also, set up your device as an External Keyboard so you can record the MIDI input.

Until I realized that Step 5 was also necessary, I couldn’t get MIDI data to show up to record to an instrument track after uninstalling and reinstalling the FA-08. I’m reasonably sure that it wasn’t configured how it is now when I had the issues I described in this post initially. After making these changes, I was able to create a new song with a basic Impact drum track and record two or three minutes uninterrupted, play it back successfully without any glitches, record a separate track on top of the initial track and then play them both back simultaneously perfectly. I haven’t tested the new configuration on the tracks I’ve already recorded yet, but I can always re-record them if they can’t be salvaged now that I have something that works.

Again, I want to thank those of you who posted trying to help me troubleshoot the problem. One thing that I’ve learned about resolving issues in life is by galvanizing your thoughts and summarizing the steps you’ve taken in order to present it to someone else for help/suggestions, you often gain insight to the problem that you might not have had otherwise.

Thanks again!
